What Is Acne & Why It Happens

Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. Hormonal changes can increase oil production which makes pores more likely to clog. Once bacteria build up inside the follicle, inflammation occurs and visible breakouts follow. This is common in teenage years but can also happen in adulthood, especially during times of hormonal change such as menstruation, pregnancy or menopause. Hormonal acne is a common form that often appears around the chin and jawline and may flare up at certain times of the month.

Causes of Acne and Acne Scars

Acne occurs when the hair follicles become clogged with excess oil and dead skin cells. Hormonal changes can increase oil production, and when combined with bacteria build-up, this leads to inflammation and visible breakouts. Acne scars form when breakouts penetrate deeply into the skin, damaging the underlying tissue. Scars can be depressed or raised and are often long-lasting without treatment. Understanding what triggers acne and how scars form is the first step in treating them effectively.

Common Types of Acne and Skin Concerns

Acne can show in several forms including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Some are non-inflammatory while others cause redness, swelling and discomfort. Acne can appear on the face, chest, shoulders or back and can affect confidence at any age. Triggers vary from person to person and can include hormones, stress, diet, friction from clothing or headwear and poor cleansing routines. Hormonal acne is particularly common in adults and may require targeted treatment to manage effectively.

Acne Spots and How They Affect Confidence

Acne spots can appear as pimples, whiteheads, blackheads or inflamed red papules. In men, higher testosterone levels can lead to increased breakouts, while in women hormonal fluctuations can have the same effect. These spots can develop on the face, chest, shoulders or back and often impact self-esteem and confidence. While mild acne can sometimes be improved with an over-the-counter acne spot treatment, more severe or persistent breakouts benefit from professional acne treatments that targets the root cause and restores balance to the skin. We offer effective treatment for spots that not only addresses active breakouts but also helps prevent new ones from forming.

Dermaux LED Phototherapy
for Acne

Dermalux LED phototherapy uses specific wavelengths of light to target the causes of acne and support skin health. Blue light helps to destroy acne-causing bacteria. Red and near-infrared light reduce inflammation, promote healing and stimulate collagen production. Treatments are comfortable, require no downtime and can leave the skin calmer, clearer and healthier.

Skin Peels
for Acne and
Acne Scarring

Our skin peel treatments use carefully selected active ingredients to improve skin tone, colour, clarity and texture. They can brighten the complexion, smooth fine lines and target pigmentation while also reducing the appearance of scarring. By removing damaged outer layers, peels reveal fresh, healthier skin underneath. This makes them a valuable treatment option for acne and post-acne marks.

Collagen Induction Therapy for Acne Scars

Collagen Induction Therapy, often called microneedling, creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production. This helps to smooth uneven skin texture and soften the look of scars. It can also enhance the absorption of active ingredients for greater results. The treatment is well tolerated, has minimal downtime and can improve overall skin quality.

Preventing Future Breakouts and Managing Triggers

Keeping skin clear often means combining effective treatments with daily prevention. This can include a consistent skincare routine using suitable products, avoiding pore-clogging makeup, protecting the skin from the sun, reducing stress, washing pillowcases and towels regularly and making small changes to diet if certain foods trigger breakouts. Regular maintenance acne treatments can also help keep results on track.

Acne Treatment FAQs

We encourage all of our clients to ask us questions so that you can feel comfortable that you have all of the knowledge, facts and choices available to you. Below here are the questions we get asked about acne spot treatments.

HydraFacial is ideal for active acne and prevention. It deeply cleanses, exfoliates and hydrates the skin while reducing congestion and bacteria. Tixel is best for improving skin texture and treating acne scars. It uses thermal energy to stimulate collagen production and smooth uneven areas. Both treatments can be combined as part of a long-term plan for clear, healthy skin.
Clients often notice improvement after one session with best results from regular monthly treatments.
Tixel is non-invasive, customisable and suitable for a range of skin types. It is effective for improving acne scars and has less downtime than traditional resurfacing.
ZO products include retinol, tretinoin, keraphine, hydrators, antioxidants and soothing formulas designed for acne prone and recovering skin.
HydraFacial™ delivers immediate glow and clearer skin. Tixel results appear as the skin heals. ZO routines help maintain long term clarity.
HydraFacial™ is comfortable and has no downtime. Tixel has less downtime than many traditional resurfacing options. Skincare products are gentle and used under guidance.
To keep acne from returning, follow a personalised skincare plan recommended by your practitioner, book regular maintenance treatments and avoid known triggers. Protect your skin from the sun, manage stress and keep up with healthy daily habits such as cleansing twice a day and avoiding harsh scrubbing which can irritate the skin. If your acne is hormonal, your practitioner may also recommend specific treatments or skincare to help manage fluctuations and reduce the likelihood of breakouts.
