Commonly called age spots these areas of dark pigmentation are caused by sun damage rather than directly linked to age. However, the older you are the more likely you are to have experienced sun damage which can result in spots appearing on any part of the body that has had sun exposure from hands and face to arms, shoulders and legs. Melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, is produced in the outer layer of skin, or epidermis, creating age spots. Varying in size from small freckles to wider dark patches, true age spots are harmless but they can be unsightly giving your skin an uneven tone.
