Melanin is a pigment made by cells in the skin that affect its colour. Illness, injury, medication, sun exposure and age can result in an excess production of melanin causing it to create dark spots known as hyperpigmentation which can occur in small patches, or cover large areas of the body. Conversely, low levels of melanin cause lighter skin, and total or partial lack of melanin results in the disorder Albinism. Pigmentation can result in the skin looking uneven in tone and colour and can result in a loss of confidence and self-consciousness.
