Whilst sunlight is essential for life, over-exposure and lack of protection from it is the greatest challenge facing our skin. For many of us we’re seeing those sun-worshipping sessions of our youth taking their toll on our skin, it’s time for action. Dr Claire Oliver (BDS) recommends an advanced sun protection range, Heliocare to target the 21st century’s public enemy number one – the sun.
“Sunshine is an attack on the skin, and one way the skin defends itself is to make pigment,” explains Dr Oliver. “Over time this damage is working its way to the surface resulting in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging jaw lines, patches of mottled pigmentation and age spots. It’s actually ultraviolet light that does the damage. That means not only summer sunshine with its UVB rays (ones that cause sunburn) but also UVA rays, the ‘ageing ones” which are present in daylight all year round and penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB”.
The solution she recommends, is to invest in sunscreen such as Heliocare which protects against both UVA and UVB. Heliocare is clinically and scientifically proven to protect the skin from accelerated ageing and photodamage.
UV exposure is responsible for up to 80% of the visible signs of ageing (ie wrinkles and age spots). The term SPF only applies to UVB protection. UVB accounts for only 5% of the rays that hit our skin and UVA a colossal 95%
We also offer a system called Reveal which uses multi-spectral imaging (standard white light and UV light) to analyse surface and sub-surface conditions which are not visible to the naked eye. Reveal imaging enables our practitioners to evaluate the health and appearance of the client’s skin and offers automated analysis of the following key skin parameters; UV damage, lines and wrinkles including wrinkle depth, sebum, pores, pigmentation, redness / vascular damage, skin texture and tone.
