The science behind CoolSculpting® elite

CoolSculpting® Elite is based on the proven science of Cryolipolysis®.

Cryolipolysis® was discovered by renowned Harvard University scientists – dermatologists Dieter Manstein, MD, PhD, and R. Rox Anderson, MD – who observed that some children got dimples when they ate popsicles.

The subsequent idea that cold can selectively affect and eliminate fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue, became the insight behind Cryolipolysis®. Manstein & Anderson’s research team proved, that under carefully controlled laboratory conditions, subcutaneous fat cells are naturally more vulnerable to the effects of cold than other tissue.

CoolSculpting® Elite uses this science to induce lipolysis – the breaking down of fat cells – to give clients a noticeable, natural-looking reduction in fat. How? The cooled fat cells undergo apoptosis that kills the cells, gradually eliminating them and, in turn, reducing the thickness of the fat layer.

What can i expect after my treatment?

Some treatments can be completed in under an hour – you can even have CoolSculpting® Elite on your lunch break! Because there is no need for anaesthesia, no needles and no surgery, there is usually no need for specific downtime.

The effected tissue may look and feel a little stiff after treatment and you may experience some redness and bruising as a result of the suction, but this is all perfectly normal and will correct its self through natural recovery.

It’s important to ask lots of questions and fully explore all options available to you. Here are the most popular questions asked.

As the name suggests CoolSculpting® can be a little chilly. Controlled cooling is delivered via an applicator to freeze the targeted fat. Though you may feel intense cold initially this feeling usually subsides as the area numbs. As a leading non-invasive fat-reduction treatment CoolSculpting® has a well-established safety and efficacy profile.

CoolSculpting® systems are controlled cooling devices designed with built-in safety measures. If sensors detect that the skin is getting too cold the system will shut down automatically. Freeze Detect is unique to CoolSculpting®. Additionally, because most applicators use a vacuum to draw fatty tissue into the applicator cup, you may also feel some pulling, tugging and/or mild pinching.

After we have selected the area(s) to be treated the device is positioned on your body and controlled cooling is applied. A gel pad and applicator are also applied to the targeted area and a vacuum applicator draws the tissue into the applicator cup. Applicators are secured to the treatment area. All applicators deliver controlled cooling to the targeted fat.
One of the biggest areas of concern for women seems to be “mummy tummy,” or how CoolSculpting® can help women have a flatter tummy/stomach. The stomach can be an area of concern as it is a place that can store excess fat easily, and be resistant to diet and exercise. CoolSculpting® can be an ideal partner to a healthy lifestyle when trying to minimise excess abdominal fat.

Many of us think that weight loss and fat reductions are one and the same thing but they’re not. By the time we reach adolescence our body has laid down all the fat cells it will have as an adult. From that point on as we lose weight, our fat cells shrink but the number of cells remains exactly the same. When we gain weight those annoying fat cells simply get larger again; they swell.

The beauty of CoolSculpting® is that it works to reduce the actual number of fat cells in specific areas of our body and once those cells have disappeared they’re no longer there to get any bigger.

CoolSculpting® is particularly useful for those hard to lose pockets of stubborn fat which are diet and exercise-resistant. Areas including love handles, post-pregnancy paunch, muffin top, upper arms, inner thighs and under the chin respond, extremely well to CoolSculpting®.

CoolSculpting® extracts energy to cool fat cells thereby triggering their natural cell death. CoolSculpting® only extracts enough energy to selectively target fat cells. Other cells and tissue all remain unharmed by the treatment. Extensive experience has also shown us that clients tolerate the treatment well without the need for pain medication during the treatment itself. CoolSculpting® is technique dependent and requires no staff time once the client is set up and the treatment is underway.

Liposuction, on the other hand, is a heat-based procedure which works by delivering intense heat through the skin resulting in traumatic and sudden cell death. It is non-specific in terms of energy delivery and, as a result, tissue other than fat cells may be affected. With Liposuction patients also often require pain management especially in complex procedure cases. Liposuction is also technique dependent with a very small margin for error.

In summary, unlike a lot of other treatments CoolSculpting® takes very little time – a treatment session usually takes just 35 minutes – is virtually painless and is, therefore, simple to fit into your daily life. After your CoolSculpting® treatment you can typically get right back to your busy day whereas with procedures such as Liposuction several weeks off work are often required for recovery.
