Sofwave™ vs Ultherapy® - Which Non-Surgical Treatment is Best for You?

11th February 2025

Both Sofwave and Ultherapy are non-invasive ultrasound treatments designed to tighten skin by boosting collagen. The main difference is their target depth: Sofwave uses Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam (SUPERB™) technology to treat the mid-dermal layer, while Ultherapy's focused ultrasound reaches the deeper layers of the skin.

As non-surgical skin lifting and tightening treatments gain popularity, many are comparing Sofwave™ vs Ultherapy® to determine the best option for lifting and firming the skin. Both treatments offer impressive results with minimal downtime, but which treatment is best for you?

This guide breaks down what you need to know, results, differences and costs.

If you’re ready for your treatment, or would prefer to speak to one of our expert practitioners, then book your complimentary consultation now.

What is Sofwave™?

Sofwave™ is a new skin lifting and tightening treatment that uses Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam (SUPERB™) technology. This non-invasive treatment targets the mid-dermal layer (between 0.5 and 2mm into the skin), stimulating collagen and elastin production to improve fine lines, wrinkles and skin laxity.

With a treatment time of around 60 minutes and no downtime, it's an excellent option for those wanting natural-yet-noticeable results without disrupting their routine.

What is Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® uses micro-focused ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production at deeper layers of the skin, reaching the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) layer. This process lifts and tightens sagging skin, targeting layers traditionally addressed only through surgery.

This treatment stimulates the natural production of collagen and elastin, the key proteins that keep skin smooth, firm and youthful. It’s the only non-invasive treatment that achieves results directly comparable to a facelift over time.

Sessions typically take between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

The Differences: Sofwave™ vs Ultherapy®

Sofwave™ and Ultherapy® are both advanced ultrasound-based treatments, but how do they differ?

Ultherapy® has been a trusted skin-tightening device for many years, delivering consistent results with a strong safety record. Ultherapy® uses high-focused ultrasound technology with a single applicator, to target deeper layers of the skin. In contrast, Sofwave™ utilises Parallel Beam Technology, which treats a broader area rather than concentrating energy on specific hotspots.

Sofwave™ works within the skin’s more superficial layers and is FDA-cleared for lifting and tightening the eyebrow and submentum. It has been clinically proven to be just as effective as Ultherapy®, offering an average lift of 3-4mm on the eyebrow. However, because it does not penetrate as deeply, it avoids the potential structural changes that other devices can sometimes cause.

This makes Sofwave™ suitable for use across the entire face and neck, including areas with nerves and glands, without any risk of damage.

Sofwave™ vs Ultherapy® FAQs

What are the risks of Sofwave™ vs Ultherapy®?

Both treatments are safe when performed by trained professionals. Temporary redness, swelling, or mild discomfort may occur but typically resolve quickly within a few hours.

How does Sofwave™ work?

Sofwave™ uses ultrasound energy to heat the mid-dermis, triggering collagen and elastin production for firmer skin. The parallel beam technology treats 8-10 times more tissue than other medical devices.

How does Ultherapy® work?

Ultherapy® delivers focused ultrasound energy deep into the skin, stimulating collagen renewal and providing a natural lift over time.

Is Ultherapy® better than Sofwave™?

Ultherapy® is better for deep lifting, while Sofwave™ is excellent for fine lines and mild to moderate skin laxity. The right choice depends on your needs.

What are the downsides of Sofwave™?

Sofwave™ is best used to treat mid dermal layers compared to Ultherapy® which is FDA cleared to treat the deeper, SMAS layer, so Sofwave™ may not be as effective for severe sagging

Is anything better than Ultherapy®?

It depends on the area being treated. Some patients combine treatments for optimal results.
