Surgical vs Non Surgical Facelifts: What are the options?

20th August 2015

People consider having facelifts for many different reasons – don't worry, you are not alone! On the contrary, this type of surgery has now become commonplace in the UK. When deciding between surgical vs non surgical facelifts, it’s important to understand the benefits, risks, and outcomes of each option before making a choice.

Many people say that they are looking tired, or are beginning to look like their mother. Others say that their jowls make them look miserable all the time, when in fact they are not miserable at all. Those who adopt a very proactive approach to managing the ageing process, opt for a facelift before everything starts 'going South'.

Surgical Facelifts

Rhytidectom

Surgical vs non surgical facelifts are often compared when patients are considering how to address signs of aging. A surgical facelift (Rhytidectomy) is a procedure to remove any excess fat, tighten underlying tissues and redrape the skin of the face and neck. It is useful to think of the term facelift as representing a spectrum, with the surgical facelift at one end of the spectrum, the non-surgical ‘8 Point Facelift’ at the other end and the Advanced Mini Facelift somewhere between the two.

A facelift can be carried out on almost everyone, but is particularly successful when performed on someone with good bone structure whose facial tissues have begun to sag, but still maintain some elasticity. A number of factors determine what type of facelift is best for you. When exploring surgical vs non surgical facelifts, factors like age, skin elasticity, and desired downtime play a role in determining the best option.

Your surgeon will take into account: your wishes and expectations; your anatomy and the degree to which your face has sagged and what is realistically achievable before advising your options.

There is no doubt full facelifts surgery is more extensive – the dissection extends far into the tissues of the face and neck. Whilst this will allow more dramatic improvement in appearance, the risks are higher and the recovery period may be somewhat prolonged in comparison with an Advanced Mini Facelift.

Advanced Mini Facelifts

Advanced Mini Facelifts incorporate a stitch that lifts and holds whilst the skin of the face is then redraped over the tightened underlying tissues.

Advantages are an immediate improvement in the appearance of prominent jowls and nose to mouth folds (nasolabial folds) and neckline with significantly fewer risks and complications than with a full surgical facelift. Recovery is quicker with a return to normal daily activities of typically two weeks.

This treatment is carried out under sedation and local anaesthesia; a general anaesthetic is not required. Scarring, swelling and bruising varies from patient to patient

Non Surgical Alternatives

For some individuals, surgery is the only option, however more and more of my clients are telling me that a non-surgical alternative is required. Understanding the difference between surgical vs non surgical facelifts can help patients choose the right path for their aesthetic goals. Revolutionary advances in technology and techniques, allow us to offer non-invasive treatments, generally with zero or very little downtime.

8 Point Face Lift

The ‘8 Point Face Lift’ is in my opinion the most innovative, non-surgical and natural way to tighten and lift the face quickly and with no downtime. This is a popular choice for those comparing surgical vs non surgical facelifts, especially if they are seeking minimal downtime and a more subtle enhancement. Using a combination of FDA approved fillers and anti-wrinkle injections I am able to specifically address each problem area of the face and neck to achieve your own wishes and expectations.

The 8 Point Face Lift | Surgical vs Non Surgical Facelifts

This treatment provides truly remarkable results and is virtually pain free, quick, easy and safe. Pain and swelling is minimal and a topical anaesthetic cream is used to ensure you are comfortable. A short course of skin rejuvenation treatments to improve texture and tone of the skin is recommended to return your skin to a healthy, vibrant state.

Considering Facelifts … My Advice

1) Look for a doctor/dentist/nurse-led clinic registered with the GMC/GDC and ask how experienced the practitioner is. If you are considering surgery ensure they are also a CQC registered hospital (Care Quality Commission).

2) Ensure non-invasive products are clinically proven, ie FDA approved, so you can be assured of their safety and results.

3) Have one or more consultations to ensure you feel confident with the environment. Meet the surgeon or aesthetics practitioner who will be treating you until you are confident they understand what you are trying to achieve and you understand the results they believe they can achieve.

4) Ask to see examples of their previous work or testimonials.

5) Ask for information regarding alternative treatments and allow yourself a 10-14 day cooling off period before you commit to treatment.

Whether you are considering surgical vs non surgical facelifts, it is essential to choose a qualified and experienced practitioner to ensure safety and satisfactory results. Book your complimentary consultation with us here at Air Aesthetics to discuss your aesthetic goals in safe hands.
